Panther Expedited Services Lends Support to the Prevent Cancer Foundation

ALEXANDRIA, Va. —Panther Expedited Services, Inc. has selected the Prevent Cancer Foundation as recipient of its workplace giving program.

Panther, a leader in premium air and ground transportation headquartered in Seville, Ohio, employs over 375 people and has a contractual relationship with over 2,000 drivers. Each of these employees and contractors will have the opportunity to donate money to the Prevent Cancer Foundation to help further its mission to prevent cancer and detect it early through cutting-edge research, education and awareness programs and community outreach to the underserved across the country. Panther will match a percentage of collected donations.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation (formerly the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation) was started in 1985 when founder Carolyn Aldige first understood the power of prevention to defeat cancer and recognized that too few of the country's resources were used to promote cancer prevention research or education. Today, it is one of the nation's leading health organizations and has catapulted cancer prevention to prominence.

Since its inception the Prevent Cancer Foundation has provided more than $97 million in support of cancer prevention and early detection research, education and community outreach programs. Its peer-reviewed grants have been awarded to more than 300 scientists from more than 150 of the leading academic medical centers nationwide. This research has been pivotal in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important cancer prevention and early detection strategies.

Zach Taylor Named National AmeriCorps Member of the Year

RENO, Nev. — first glance of his resume, Zachary Taylor seems an unlikely candidate for Great Basin Institute’s Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC). Yet, he has excelled to the degree that his boss depends on him to lead and train other AmeriCorps members. That leadership has earned Taylor the 2008 National Service Award for AmeriCorps Member of the Year.

Taylor holds a bachelor's degree in history and English, but according to Matt Johnson, director of Nevada Conservation Corps, he is tops at his NCC job.
"From day one Zach clearly stepped up showing leadership," said Johnson. "Within four months, we had Zach leading NCC crews and teaching others the skills needed for the job. This normally takes someone at least a year."

Nominating Taylor for the national award was easy decision, Johnson said. "The greatest aspect of his skills is that we can trust Zach on any project he is assigned to complete. When we send him out to build or clean up a trail, it's always done right.”

Taylor, who hails from Illinois, learned about the AmeriCorps program with Nevada Conservation Corps through his sister, an AmeriCorps alumni. "I worked on a volunteer project prior to coming to NCC and becoming an AmeriCorps Nevada member," said Taylor. "That experience taught me the importance of the national trail systems and how they affect the general public. I wanted to be a part of preserving and expanding them."

Nevada Volunteers creates countless opportunities to inspire, teach, train and recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses across Nevada to develop a legacy of service and citizenship. The Nevada Volunteers is the governor's commission that administers AmeriCorps programs statewide and hosts the annual Governor's Points of Light award. Since 1998, over 1,100 AmeriCorps members have served throughout Nevada recruiting more than 14,000 volunteers who donated over 97,000 hours of service to local communities.

Now in its tenth year, the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and conservation throughout the West. GBI advances ecological literacy and habitat restoration through educational outreach and direct service programs like the Nevada Conservation Corps.

Nevada Conservation Corps is a statewide program that transcends racial, ethnic and economic barriers by creating a cadre of corps members comprised of diverse backgrounds, drawing a broad-based national recruitment process. By uniting environmental resources from federal, state and county agencies, the NCC provides students and young professionals opportunities to make meaningful contributions toward protecting and conserving Nevada 's natural heritage, while also gaining valuable work experience in natural resource management.

AmeriCorps is an invaluable program that impacts lives and communities throughout the country. In Nevada, the AmeriCorps program is a vibrant and critical component in areas of critical need, including conservation, working with veterans, and providing opportunities to at-risk children, to name just a few. DBI Announces Contest to Benefit Charities

AUSTIN, Texas — Database-Brothers, Inc. (DBI) announced an international database tuning charity event benefiting the American Red Cross, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Participation for organizations and database administrators is free, and participants could win badges plus expenses to the IBM Information on Demand Conference held in Las Vegas October 26-31, 2008.

The event begins June 5 with a kickoff Webinar on database tuning and cost measurements. Contest rules will be reviewed, and participants will "vote" for their favorite charities. Participants will then have two weeks to tune their production databases with the objectives of reducing processing costs, and improving throughput and efficiency. Final performance data must be submitted by June 19, and results and winners will be announced during a Webinar on June 25.

For each participating production database, DBI will donate $25 to the charity pool. In addition, DBI will donate 1 percent of new license sales during calendar Q2 to the charity pool. The charities will receive a pro rata share of the charity pool according to the participant votes. Participating organizations may benefit from better performing applications and data warehouses that operate with lower costs.

"This reminds me of the Pay It Forward movie and movement," said Scott Hayes, oresident & CEO of DBI. "Our intent is to help a lot of people, directly and indirectly. Several DBI team members have had their lives touched by cancer and diabetes, and others are active Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Good goes around. This is a good thing we are doing. National MS Society Receives $10k from Fonville Morisey Realty's Annual Golf Tourney

RALEIGH, N.C. — The National MS Society was presented with a $10,000 donation at the conclusion of the 12th Annual Fonville Morisey Realty Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament, held at Wildwood Green Golf Club, enabled more than 110 sales associates and employees the opportunity to give back to the local community. Throughout the golf tournament’s 12 years, Fonville Morisey has raised more than $135,000 for community organizations.

Golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf, lunch, course prizes and a raffle. The post-golf dinner was held in Wildwood’s pavilion, and the meal was catered by Ron’s Barn of Coats, N.C.

MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. KPMG and First Book Team to Provide New Books to Children in Need

WASHINGTON. D. C. — First Book , the nonprofit organization placing new books into the hands of children in need, announced the launch of a collaboration with KPMG LLP , the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm. KPMG has contributed $250,000 and sponsored the distribution of more than 200,000 brand new books to children from low-income families nationwide in 2008.

First Book is teaming with KPMG’s Family for Literacy, a bold initiative that organizes volunteers to fund the purchase of books, conduct reading programs in schools, and work with existing literacy programs to distribute books supplied by First Book. The program initially launched in seven key cities in 2008, including Denver, CO, Minneapolis, MN, Washington DC / Tysons Corner, VA, Short Hills, NJ, Montvale, NJ, Stamford, CT, and Houston, TX.

“We applaud KPMG for weaving First Book into the fabric of their philanthropic and community values in such a sweeping and tangible way," said Kyle Zimmer, president of First Book.

KPMG's Family for Literacy participants will also reach out through their own professional and personal networks to register existing community literacy programs with First Book, enabling these groups to gain permanent access to a steady stream of new books for the children they serve.

Talent Show to Benefit Women's Resource Center of Newport & Bristol Counties

BRISTOL — R. I. — The 2008 Rhode Island’s Got Talent show, presented by The East Bay Chamber of Commerce, announced that a portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Women's Resource Center of Newport & Bristol Counties (WRC).

The WRC takes a leadership role in Newport and Bristol Counties to end domestic violence through its own programs and in collaboration with others. WRC was founded in 1977 by a group of women committed to helping families in abusive situations.

“At WRC, we are dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence by providing women, children, men and elderly emergency and crisis support through a 24-hour hotline, walk-in services, court advocacy, counseling, referrals, financial literacy program and shelter services," said Lori DiPersio, executive director of Women's Resource Center of Newport & Bristol Counties. "We are appreciative to the East Bay Chamber of Commerce for recognizing our organization."

Rhode Island’s Got Talent will showcase Rhode Island talent – including some of the areas best performers. The event will take place Aug. 16 at Barrington High School and $1,750 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. The East Bay Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to improving the economic, industrial, professional, cultural and civic welfare of the area by preserving the competitive enterprise system of business and by promoting business and community growth and development. Author Hosts Book Donation Drive to Benefit Operation Paperback

LAS VEGAS — Author Bill Loucks will sign copies of his humorous book “The Committee: Man’s Inner Voices and Who Left the Toilet Seat Up?” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Barnes & Noble, 567 N. Stephanie Street in Henderson; and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Barnes & Noble, 8915 W. Charleston Blvd. Additional signings will be scheduled in June.

Loucks will donate $2 for every copy of his book sold to Operation Paperback, a non-profit organization that collects gently used books and sends them to American troops deployed overseas. People may also bring gently used books to the signings, which Loucks is collecting for donation to Operation Paperback.

“So many of our nation’s troops are serving in faraway places and don’t have some of the basic comforts that most of us take for granted, like a good book,” said Loucks. “Donating even just one book off your shelf not only benefits our men and women overseas, but it also boosts their morale to know that people back home are thinking of them.”

As of January 2008, Operation Paperback had collected and sent 780,892 books to troops overseas in places such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Bosnia, Bahrain, Kuwait, navy ships at sea, and military hospitals.

Loucks is married with children and lives in Las Vegas. He says the inspiration for his book comes from life lessons he has experienced, some of which were repeated over and over or learned the hard way. When he humorously tried to find a way out of accepting responsibility for his actions, he would say, “Don’t blame me. My committee made me do it.”

This is a great way to help support U.S. troops. Many of our troops overseas have little in the way of comforts, and they welcome books to help them fill their free time.

KTNV Channel 13 to Host Second Annual Telethon to Benefit Opportunity Village

LAS VEGAS — KTNV Channel 13 will host the Second Annual Building Opportunity Telethon to benefit the men and women of Opportunity Village from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18. The telethon will raise the much needed funds to help build the third Opportunity Village campus, The Ralph & Betty Engelstad Campus. Lack of space prohibits Opportunity Village from meeting the needs of hundreds of Las Vegas residents with intellectual disabilities who require the many programs and services Opportunity Village provides.

Festivities will also take place at Opportunity Village’s main campus on June 18 located at 6300 W. Oakey Blvd. including a catered meal from Memphis Championship Barbecue for anyone who stops by to pledge at least $30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Opportunity Village’s antique carousel will be running for all ages to enjoy as well as the Forest Express Train, which runs through the Magical Forest.

Opportunity Village representatives will be available to give tours of the Oakey campus and accept donations. Channel 13 will also be on hand to capture surprise check presentations from community corporations. Nevada Volunteers to Honor Outstanding AmeriCorps, VISTA and Senior Corps Members

CARSON CITY, Nev. —Governor Jim Gibbons has decreed the week of May 11 as National AmeriCorps Week in Nevada. Each year commemorating National AmeriCorps Week, Nevada Volunteers honors outstanding AmeriCorps, VISTA and Senior Corps participants that have served the state of Nevada with the National Service Award. The celebration will be held at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 12. First Lady Dawn Gibbons, along with Nevada Volunteers commissioners in attendance, will present the awards.

After 30 years leading the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Carson City, Nevada Volunteers Commissioner Janice Ayres will also receive an award for Senior Corps Supervisor of the Year.

"I began my involvement with RSVP in 1972 by writing the grant that led to bringing the first program to Nevada in 1973," Ayres said. "That began me on the path to help shut-in seniors in our state live independently rather than being moved into institutionalized care. I feel the funds spent sponsoring our RSVP volunteers are multiplied in savings of tax dollars and improved quality of life by both the volunteer and the senior now able to live independently."

Seven National Service Awards will be presented: AmeriCorps Member of the Year, AmeriCorps Program Director of the Year, VISTA person of the Year, VISTA Site Supervisor of the Year, Senior Corps Participant of the Year, Senior Corps Supervisor of the Year, and Learn & Serve Student of the Year. There also will also be a special presentation to First Lady Dawn Gibbons for her service to Nevada.
