Reno's REI Store Contributes For Trails Website

Lake Tahoe, Nev. — According to the Sierra Sun, a $18,000 grant from the Nevada Commission on Tourism, along with a $15,000 grant from Reno’s REI store, will be used to develop Sierra Front Web site as a clearinghouse for regional trail resources.

“With the Web site you’ll be able to say you want to go snowshoeing and it will pop up all the trails,” Paquita Bath, a spokesperson for Sierra Front, said. “We want to raise awareness and funds for the area’s outdoor recreation.”

Former Truckee Mayor Beth Ingalls added that the Web site will provide comprehensive information on trails that would otherwise be scattered through different organizations’ outreach programs.

Bath said the site will also be used to attract funds for other Sierra Front trail-building projects, which includes the Reno-to-Rim Trail. This trail connects Reno to the Tahoe Rim Trail and could be completed as soon as the summer of 2009. The trail will be about 15 miles long and will serve hikers and cyclists.

Mount Rose Ski Tahoe recently added a voluntary $5 donation on its season passes for the trail. More than 1,600 passholders have donated so far. Sierra Front will host its next trail-building training conference in May.

4imprint Awards Grants, Including Nevada

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Using what it calls an unconventional grant-making approach, 4imprint, an Oshkosh, Wisconsin-based imprinted products retailer, awarded more than $145,500 in in-kind charitable grants, by giving out at least one $500 grant every business day during 2006.

Through the company's one by one® charitable grants program, nearly 300 non-profit organizations, in the United States, Guam, Canada, and Mexico, garnered a $500 promotional products grant in 2006. 4imprint's one by one® program also awards community grants to non-profit organizations near the company's headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

In the 4th quarter alone, $36,500 in in-kind grants was awarded. The one by one® program awards $500 in promotional products to US-based charitable organizations or $600 in promotional products to Canadian-based charitable organizations. Eligible organizations include those with IRS-approved 501(c)3 status or Canadian registered charities, religious organizations and accredited schools.

Benefactors in Nevada include: Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Inc. (Sparks) and I'm a Kid Foundation (Henderson).

Foundation Hosts Card Tournament

Yerington, Nev. — According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, a recently-formed nonprofit foundation designed to help families with members facing catastrophic illness or injury will host its first fundraiser, the 1st Annual Josh Farler Memorial Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament on Feb. 17-18.

Friends and family of Josh Farler, who died in December 2005 at age 20 after a courageous battle with testicular cancer, formed the Josh Farler Helping Hands Foundation in memory of the Yerington native, with one goal to keep his memory alive.

They knew of the hardships families can face when a loved one faces significant hospitalization, with many costs such as transportation and food and lodging for the family not covered by insurance, so they decided to form the foundation to help some such families with those costs.

Locals who wish to support the Foundation may do so by becoming a sustaining member (see form below) and by making a tax-free donation to the Helping Hands Foundation.

The inaugural Texas Hold 'Em tournament is scheduled for Feb. 17-18 at 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Mason Valley, with all proceeds benefiting the foundation. The entry fee is $50. The tournament is open to anyone age 21 and older.

Those interested in participating may register at the Boys and Girls Club (124 No. Main St.) or by calling 463-5114. Registration forms may be received by mail from the Foundation at P.O. The tournament will be similar to other Texas Hold 'Em tournaments that are becoming increasingly popular, with many in California and also Nevada.

By becoming a sustaining member of the Helping Hands Foundation (with four donation levels offered), donors will receive a special certificate and receive occasional statements from the Foundation showing how much of the donations are being sent to needy families in the community. They will also receive applications "so that you may help us identify those in need."

The main focus is to help the youth of Mason and Smith Valleys who face life-threatening injury or illness but applications for others living elsewhere will also be considered, depending on funding available.

A brochure about the foundation says, "Our goal is to help the family with expenses not covered by insurance to bridge the gap."

Huntington Beach, Calif. — BJ's Restaurants, Inc., a long time supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation donated $250,000 to the foundation. The donation comes from the Company's 2006 Cookies for Kids program.

This program calls for the Company to donate a portion of the sale of every signature Pizookie(R) dessert to the CF Foundation. Former Google Engineer Donates $250,000

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. — According to the San Diego Union Tribune, a former Google Inc. software engineer has donated $250,000 to replace a Lake Tahoe track that was used to provide high-elevation training for American runners competing in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Ray Sidney's contribution puts the $2.2 million fund-raising drive for a new track and athletic field at South Tahoe Middle School over the top, organizers said.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School Board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to put the project out to bid. Supporters hope the work can be completed by August. The track is plagued by a cracked surface, a tendency to collect puddles and uneven lanes. Plans call for it to be replaced by a nine-lane track with an artificial field in the middle.

Sidney, a triathlete who moved to Lake Tahoe after the Internet search engine went public and who now owns a real estate development company, made the largest private monetary donation to the project and is no stranger to philanthropy. His past donations include $200,000 for Kahle Community Center's weight room in Stateline and $1.7 million for a state-of-the-art football field and track at Douglas High School in nearby Minden.

“I'm a bit of an easy mark maybe,” Sidney joked.

East West Partners Donate $1 Million

Truckee, Calif. — According to the Auburn Journal, East West Partners, through Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation, and in partnership with Sierra Watch and Mountain Area Preservation Foundation (MAPF), contributed $1 million to the Truckee Donner Land Trust.

The contribution was generated from community benefit fees on all real estate sales at the Village at Northstar, one of East West Partners' four Tahoe Mountain Resorts (TMR) communities now under development in North Lake Tahoe. The Village is located at the base of Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort with first-class, all-season recreational experiences - all pedestrian-friendly - including creative new restaurants, upscale retail shops, an ice skating rink and plaza, and new luxury residences and lodging facilities.

This is the first of many contributions to be made by East West Partners for open space protection in the Martis Valley region and was a result of a series of agreements which created funding mechanisms for open space preservation.

"There will always be a critical need to preserve open space in the Martis Valley," says Roger Lessman, managing partner for East West Partners' Tahoe operations. "To that end, East West Partners has levied a community benefit fee from real estate sales to support several environmental foundations aimed at acquiring and protecting open space, river and stream restoration projects and community education programs for the North Lake Tahoe region."

Founded in 1990, the Truckee Donner Land Trust is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve and protect important historic, recreational and scenic open spaces in the greater Truckee-Tahoe region. With over 1,400 members, the Land Trust has so far protected more than 11,000 acres, with plans to protect 35,000 valued at over $110 million.

"This contribution is a substantial down payment on conservation in the Tahoe-Truckee Region," says Tom Mooers, executive director of Sierra Watch. "One million dollars today means permanent protection of Martis Valley resources forever."

Sierra Watch is a nonprofit environmental organization committed to protecting the unique scenic, biological and agricultural resources of the Sierra Nevada, including the Martis Valley. MAPF is an environmental, nonprofit organization established by concerned residents of the Truckee-Tahoe region to preserve, protect and enhance the region's environment.

To date, including today's $1 million contribution, East West Partners, through its Tahoe Mountain Resorts communities, have funded $2.3 million in environmental programs and general community donations. It is estimated that the Tahoe Mountain Resorts communities will generate more than $50 million over the next 20 years to acquire open space, restore natural areas and support environmental education.

Although the Truckee Donner Land Trust is located in California, its efforts directly benefit Nevada as well, helping to protect and preserve Lake Tahoe, which is a national asset shared by California and Nevada.

MGM MIRAGE Steps Up Philanthropy

LAS VEGAS - MGM MIRAGE announced the promotion of Merlinda Gallegos to the position of Vice President of Corporate Philanthropy today. Gallegos will oversee the company's charitable giving initiatives and activities associated with the Voice Foundation.

The Voice Foundation is the company's nonprofit entity that collects and disperses employee donations to deserving charities and causes where its employees live and work.

Gallegos joined MGM MIRAGE in 2005 as the Director of Corporate Philanthropy. Under her leadership, the philanthropy department directed the Katrina Recovery Fund and other relief services for employees of the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. Her team also introduced the Voice Foundation at Mandalay Resort Group properties following the merger with MGM MIRAGE in 2005.

The decision to promote her to vice president in a clear indication that MGM MIRAGE is taking their already strong business giving efforts to the next level. Along with Gallegos, the company also announced the appointment of Gary Mayo as Vice President of Energy and Environmental Services. In this role, Mayo will create and execute the corporate strategy for sustainability and raise the awareness among employees, business partners, and guests. (This is an extremely innovative idea.)

Verizon Customers Focus On Literacy

NEW YORK — Verizon telephone customers who participated in Verizon's convenient Check Into Literacy Program, nonprofit organizations throughout 26 states and Washington, D.C., will receive more than $1.28 million to bolster local literacy efforts. It's a great idea called "The Check Into Literacy Program," which enables Verizon landline telephone customers to support literacy by simply checking a box on their monthly phone bills to make a $1 tax-deductible donation. Verizon then distributes the donations to local literacy organizations that serve the individual states the customers live in.

"The generosity of our customers and the commitment of our Verizon employee volunteers go hand-in-hand in our grassroots campaign to continue the important work of improving literacy in our communities," said Verizon Foundation President Patrick Gaston.

AFP Reviews ROI On Philanthropy

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) addresses how corporate giving increases company profits at a rate of return of 200 to 300 percent, according to a new study.

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal (“Charity Has Its Rewards for Generous Companies,” Jan. 7, registration required to view the article), the study shows that for every dollar a corporation gives to charity, they can expect profits to rise by two or three dollars.

The study, Is Doing Good Good for You? Yes, Charitable Contributions Enhance Revenue Growth, examined 251 corporate donors and their giving contributions from1989 to 2000. The researchers, led by Prof. Baruch Lev at New York University’s Stern School of Business, found that corporate giving is associated with subsequent sales growth, particularly for businesses in fields where consumer perception can be important.

However, the study’s researchers were quick to note that corporate giving is still a very minor percentage of overall costs and profits. The firms in the study spent 50 times more on marketing than philanthropy, and their average giving was only 0.1 percent of average sales revenue. Visit AFP to to see an abstract of the study.

NCNCS Announces VISTA Recruitment

Fallon, Nev. — The Nevada Commission for National and Community Service (NCNCS) announced its search for two AmeriCorps VISTA applicants who will help promote volunteerism and service-learning in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area.

One VISTA will be placed with the University of Nevada, Reno in support of the Building a Healthy Nevada initiative and the other will serve with the United Way of Northern Nevada to support the new 211 Get Help, Give Help initiative.

The University of Nevada, Reno College of Health and Human Sciences will work with the selected AmeriCorpsVISTA to develop relationships between faculty and local agencies and organizations. These partnerships will provide a setting for students to engage in service-learning that supports work to improve the conditions of low-income families in the local area.

The United Way of Northern Nevada AmeriCorps VISTA will support their new 211 initiative, which is a phone system that allows people across the state to “Get Help, Give Help.” The VISTA will be an integral member of the planning team to design and implement this new service. In addition the VISTA will work with local corporate volunteer programs to support and expand their volunteer efforts and capacity and help in disaster preparedness training and management.

ComputerCorps Benefits From Businesses

Carson City, Nev. — After computers donated by businesses and individuals, ComputerCorps upgrades, repairs them, and gives them to children in disadvantaged circumstances. The result is their "Every Home a Classroom" program, which has put more than 6,000 computers into homes where children otherwise may not have one.

According to the Nevada Appeal, ComputerCorps launched the program six years ago in which a home with school-aged children can obtain a "free" computer system - monitor, keyboard, mouse and other equipment - in return for community service rather than cash.

"Each member of the family (9 years of age or older) who uses the computer is asked to donate 10 hours of community service at the organization of their choice," Norton said. "It can be a school, church or their favorite nonprofit."

McIntosh Trust Donates $200,000 For Wild Horses

Carson City, Nev. — According to the Nevada Appeal, the McIntosh Family Trust will make a $200,000 donation to the Wild Horse and Burro Expo.

The trust was established by Jay and Virginia McIntosh, longtime residents of Northern Nevada. The couple established Mac's Bail Bonds and used its success to establish Ponderosa Insurance. Ponderosa was the first domestic, multiline insurance company in the state.

The profits from the sale of Ponderosa were used to create the trust in 1982. The couple's nieces were appointed as trustees following the death of Jay McIntosh five years ago.

"The money is to be used for youth education, to provide funds for those who can't afford vision care, to assist and preserve Nevada's wild horses and burros and to promote Native American health, education and welfare," Richard S. Staub, the attorney representing the trust, said.

The Expo is a nonprofit organization serving as an advocate for wild horses and burros throughout Nevada. The group works to ensure that sufficient habitat is available for the wild horse and burro population as well as training and adoption assistance. This $200,000 donation is the second large donation made by the trust in the last three years. The trustees approved a $100,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada in 2004.

Gap, Inc. Piperlime Partners With S4S

LAS VEGAS — Gap Inc.'s Piperlime recently teamed with Soles4Souls™ Inc. (S4S) to hold a celebrity shoe auction featuring glamorous footwear donated by celebrities including Jessica Simpson, Misha Barton, and Sharon Stone. The mission of S4S is to impact upon as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes. To date S4S, a nonprofit group founded in December 2004 after a tsunami hit Southeast Asia, have distributed over one million pairs of new and gently-used footwear to those in need.

Last December, S4S had also signed an agreement with three baseball stars to help deliver free shoes to their home countries. Manny Mota, Raul Mondesi and Orlando Cabrera have teamed up with S4S to coordinate massive footwear drives in the Dominican Republic and Colombia. Each player will receive a container of shoes, an estimated 15,000 pairs and they will help distribute the footwear to thise most in need in local communities.

Manny Mona will distribute his container of shoes in the El Tamarindo area of Santo Domingo. Raul Mondesi will help distribute the shoes in San Cristóbal, where he is currently a council member for the city of San Cristóbal, and Orlando Cabrera will help distribute the shoes in his hometown of Cartagena, Colombia. S4S are always looking for donations of shoes, or cash for freight, hosting a shoe drive, or even donating your time as a volunteer.

Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Awards $2 Million

LAS VEGAS — The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation has awarded a grant of $2 million to fund Three Square, a unique collaborative effort with the Las Vegas community to enhance production and delivery of meals to those who lack sufficient food in the Las Vegas area. Formed in late 2006 after a Hilton Foundation-funded study showed a growing need to address hunger in Southern Nevada, Three Square is embarking on an innovative program designed to transform food production, collection and delivery.

The grant will fund the planning that will lead to the construction of a central food production facility that will produce nutritious meals to be distributed through Southern Nevada food service organizations. As a first step in the program and to address immediate needs, Three Square will produce 5,000 meals per week in 2007.

"Three Square is the collective vision of many in our community who have come together to support this innovative strategy to provide food for those less fortunate in our area," said Three Square board of trustee president, Punam Mathur, senior vice president, MGM/Mirage. "This collaboration involves the five major gaming companies, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), local governmental agencies, businesses and non-profit agencies."

Three Square began as the vision of Conrad N. Hilton Foundation board member Eric Hilton, a Las Vegas resident. "Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing and most prosperous cities in the country and it is shocking to find that so many of my fellow citizens are going hungry, especially children and seniors," said Hilton.

The Hilton Foundation's study revealed that, although nearly 150 non-profit agencies in Southern Nevada are providing wholesome meals for people who lack adequate nutritious food, they are not able to keep up with the demand, and that only 43 percent are receiving a daily meal. The research further indicated that the need will double in seven years.

"Throughout the past few years, Eric Hilton's concern about the hungry in his community has evolved into a broad-based effort," said Steven M. Hilton, CEO of the Hilton Foundation. "We are pleased to support this needed program that has drawn such enthusiastic community-wide support."

A research team consisting of leading academicians from UNLV, the Clark County Health District, and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will assist in meal planning, evaluation of the menu and delivery systems and development of benchmarks for the central food facility.

Based in Reno, Nevada and Los Angeles, California, the Hilton Foundation was created in 1944 by the late hotel entrepreneur and business leader, Conrad N. Hilton, who left his fortune to the foundation with instructions to help the most disadvantaged and vulnerable throughout the world without regard to religion, ethnicity or geography. Ronn Bailey Motorsports For Kids

DAKAR RALLY, LISBON — Ronn Bailey Motorsports, which is headquartered in Boulder City, Nevada, and A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation) organizers of the Dakar 2007 event, will distribute up to 20,000 pens through schools and village representatives in the 2nd annual "Pens-for-Kids-to-Learn" campaign.

Contra Dance Organization Teams With City

LAS VEGAS - Southern Nevada Old-Time Contra Dancers has teamed with the City of Las Vegas, Leisure Services Department, Cultural Affairs Division to host an Old Time Barn Dance at the Charleston Heights Arts Center (CHAC), held on the last Saturday of the month. The CHAC is located at 800 South Brush Street, Las Vegas, near Arizona Charlie's.

Upcoming dances are scheduled for February 24, March 31, and April 28. The CHAC is located at 800 South Brush Street (2 blocks NW of Charleston and Decatur). For a modest admission, ranging from $3 to $6, participants receive a half hour of dance instruction and 3 hours of dancing.

USDA Rural Development Grant Workshop

RENO, Nev. — According to the Fallon Star Press, Larry Smith, state director for USDA Rural Development will provide a grant writing workshop for the Rural Business Enterprise Grant 2007 funding cycle. The workshop will be held Jan. 19, 9 a,n, am to noon at the Western Nevada Community College, 160 Campus Way, Room #302 Virgil Getto Hall, in Fallon.

Rural Business Enterprise grants are available to eligible public bodies, private nonprofit corporations, and federally recognized Indian Tribal Groups to finance and facilitate development of small and emerging private business enterprises, (a private business which will provide or save 50 or less jobs and has less than $1 million in projected gross revenues) located in rural areas. For Nevada, this includes most areas outside of Carson City, Reno and Las Vegas.

The public bodies, private nonprofit corporations and federally recognized Indian tribes receive the grant. The grant funds do not go directly to the small business.

RBEG funds may be used for technical assistance (providing assistance for marketing studies, feasibility studies, business plans, training, etc.) to small businesses, purchasing machinery and equipment for lease to a small and emerging business, creating a revolving loan fund (providing partial funding as a loan to a small and emerging business for the purchase of equipment, working capital, or real estate ), or to construct a building for a business incubator for small and emerging businesses.

Business Bank of Nevada Sets Giving Records

LAS VEGAS — Business Bank of Nevada achieved its fourth consecutive record year for philanthropic outreach in Nevada. In 2006, the bank’s monetary and in-kind support totaled over $75,000 in cash and in-kind donations, computer, and other office equipment along with more than 1,500 hours of volunteer services (from Bank employees). Its total giving represents a 114 percent increase over the previous year.

“We continue to be very proud of our philanthropic performance and our increased capabilities each year to help more people and communities become better places to live and work,” said Larry Charlton, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Business Bank and immediate past chairman of the board of United Way of Southern Nevada. “We view our involvement in the communities we serve as an extension of our bank, and if the community succeeds, we too will be successful.”

Charlton added that while the bank is very pleased with what it achieved last year with its monetary and in-kind donations, he and other executives were most pleased about the human resources and volunteer hours it was able to provide to nonprofit and community organizations throughout Nevada.

“Providing over 1,500 hours of volunteer services to these organizations was no small feat, especially for a company our size,” he said.

Lake Tahoe Site Of Snow Sampling School

DAVIS, Calif. — Scientists, engineers, and technicians from 12 Western states will convene in Tahoe City's Granlibakken Conference Center from January 7-12. They will receive training in snow sampling, avalanche recognition, outdoor survival and emergency care. The training also includes an overnight snow bivouac when each of the 60 participants are required to build a habitable snow hut and spend the night in it.

"Accurate snow sampling sometimes needs to be done in some pretty remote locations," says school coordinator Tony Tolsdorf. "It is rare, but occasionally snow samplers get caught in the elements and have to hole in and wait for help. It's a possibility we must recognize and prepare for."

The snow school is part of a cooperative effort to predict water supplies based on snow pack, precipitation, observed streamflow, soil moisture, and other climatic data. The school is conducted by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. NRCS also heads the national Cooperative Snow Survey and water supply forecasting program in the 12 Western states, except for California, where the state's Department of Water Resources heads the program.

Scientific snow sampling in the Western United States began in Lake Tahoe's Mt. Rose in 1906, through the efforts of Dr. James Church of the University of Nevada. Modern forecasts complement Church's manual methods with over 700 automated SNOTEL (snow pack telemetry forecast) stations throughout the West. These stations monitor precipitation data and make it available on a daily basis to those who model stream flow and forecast water availability.

Carl's Jr. To Award $60,000 in Scholarships

CARPINTERIA, Calif. — Carl's Jr. is pleased to announce that applications for the 2007 Carl N. and Margaret Karcher Founders' Scholarship are now available online at www.carlsjr.com/promotions. The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2007.

Sixty scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded to deserving students to help support continuing education. Winners will be selected based on their academic record, school and community leadership and participation, work experience and future goals. Financial need and other family circumstances will also be considered.

Applicants must be a resident of the states in which Carl's Jr. operates restaurants: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, or Washington state. They must also be high school seniors or graduates, up to 21 years of age, and planning to enroll for the first time in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational school.

The scholarship program honors the founders of Carl's Jr., Carl N. and Margaret Karcher, who as a young married couple in 1941 started a company believing that they could earn success through their commitment to faith, service and hard work. More than 65 years later, Carl's Jr. is proud to continue their commitment to the community by offering 60 hard-working high school students a $1,000 scholarship to the two- or four-year college or vocational school of their choice.

Nevada Opera Shares With Students

LAS VEGAS - The Nevada Opera Theatre, which will present "La Boheme" at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 in the Artemus Ham Concert Hall, will also be performing "Hansel & Gretel" in the Clark County Elementary Schools in March 2007. The "Hansel & Gretel" performance is part of the theater's Opera Outreach program.

In 2006, we did not report on as many corporate community relations and non-profit efforts in Nevada as we would have liked (for reasons I won't share today), but we're hoping to reverse this in 2007 with your help. If you own a company or work for a corporation operating in Nevada that is engaged in non-profit activities anywhere in the state, please make sure you add this blog to your public relations or notification list. Our goal is to publish great case studies, best practices, and news releases that will inspire other companies to give more. We would like to post one per day, every Monday through Friday.
