Sierra Pacific Lends Support Crews

RENO, Nev. - Nevada's electric utilities sent workers to the rescue when California residents were without power due to that state's forest fires last year, and when Florida reeled from one of the worst hurricane seasons on record, SPPC employees helped restore power there, too.

Sierra Pacific line crews were in Florida to help restore power to residents who've been battered by hurricanes. Four line trucks and other company vehicles and equipment were loaded on flatbed trailers for a cross-country trip to Florida.

Progress Energy, one of the electric utilities for central and north Florida, requested assistance from Sierra Pacific and other utilities throughout the U.S. Sierra Pacific crews were in Florida for 10 to 14 days, replacing hundreds of poles downed by the hurricanes.

All the costs associated with sending the employees and equipment to Florida will be reimbursed by Progress Energy through a mutual aid agreement. The act demonstrates how companies can work together during times of crisis.

US Home Co-ops With Street Teens

LAS VEGAS - US Home continues its commitment to Street Teens, the company's charity of choice. Throughout the year, Mary Ann Kalagian, lead escrow coordinator for the builder, coordinated several renovation projects at the agency's facility. US Home employees and their families also donated their time.

"We've set up regular Street Teens Workdays designed to refurbish the interior and exterior of the building," Kalagian said.

The days encompass projects ranging from general cleanup and organization to analyzing and improving the building's floor plan and function. Kalagian said the removal of the dark paneling in the living room was a good place to start.

To assist with the renovation, US Home enlisted donations from other companies. Dawn Framing constructed a 20X20-foot storage building on the property; Carpets 'N More donated carpeting for several rooms; and Sherwin-Williams Company provided all of the interior and exterior paint. General Electric also pitched in to help.

Earlier in the year, US Home presented a $50,000 check to representatives of Street Teens, a volunteer-based organization, that is dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk teens by providing counseling, temporary day shelter, food and drink, clothing, sleeping bags and transportation. Mining Company Donates Land

ELKO, Nev. - The Goldwell Open Air Museum has announced that Barrick Gold Corp., former operators of the Barrick Bullfrog Mine near Beatty, Nevada has donated a 1.8-acre parcel with a 2,250-square-foot "Red Barn" for development into a community arts center last February.

The Red Barn is near the museum's 7.8-acre sculpture site in the ghost town of Rhyolite. The museum is best known for its life-size, ghostly sculptures by the late Belgian artist Albert Szukalski.

Museum officials plan to renovate the facility into several art studios and a large multipurpose programming space over the next 18-24 months. The museum plans to offer short- and long-term residencies to professional artists, writers and filmmakers, as well as workshops and exhibitions for the general public.

Comedy Stars Raise Funds At Flamingo

LAS VEGAS - A notable group of alumni from the famed Second City comedy theatre will gather for a one-night performance, the "Benefit of Laughter", at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

The comedic stars, linked by their common history with The Second City, will unite in an effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild their homes and lives. Proceeds from the event benefit Habitat for Humanity. Stars include: George Wendt, Tim Meadows, Jeff Garlin, Richard Kind, Tim Kazurinsky, Keegan Michael Key, Neil Flynn, and Ian Gomez.

"The Flamingo Las Vegas is pleased to be part of an event that bring laughter and levity of our friends at The Second City, all to benefit a tremendous cause that has become so much a part of us all," said Don Marrandino, president of Flamingo Las Vegas.

United Airlines is the official airline for the benefit and a long-time supporter of Habitat for Humanity. United employees, through a workplace-giving program, has donated more than $76,000 to Habitat for Humanity. A significant portion of those dollars will be used for the construction of a new home in New Orleans.

ACME Home Elevator Assists Home Makeover

LAS VEGAS - Team members from ACME Home Elevator, Inc. (ACME) will appear in a November episode of ABC's ''Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.'' The show's producers invited the company to participate in a makeover for the Tom family of Fairfield, Calif.

ACME sells, installs, and services custom residential elevators. The company, which has offices in Las Vegas and Benecia, Calif., works closely with numerous interior designers, architects and builders from design through installation.

''Since our company is growing and our volume of business is rapidly increasing, we were unsure whether we could help out,'' said Terry Pope, president and CEO of ACME. ''But ABC sent us a copy of the submission tape that Susan Tom had made.''

Tom, a single mother, is raising seven adopted children, all with serious physical challenges. The video shows two of Tom's daughters, who were born without legs, going up the stairs on their hands in the family's small two-story home.

"It was heartbreaking," said Pope. ''After watching, we knew we had to get involved. So we called Custom Elevator, which agreed to donate an elevator for the project. Through our Northern California office we agreed to donate our services so the elevator could be properly coordinated and installed in the home."

While the Tom family was sent away on vacation, courtesy of ABC, builder John Laing Homes began tearing down much of the family's existing home and rebuilding a newer, more functional one. Due to the small lot size and the number of bedrooms needed, a 3-story home was designed.

A member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the national association that writes all of the nation's elevator and escalator codes, and past chairman of ASM's Accessibility and Residential Committee, Pope was able to work closely with the architect and engineer to ensure the elevator's hoistway structure would meet earthquake and building code requirements. Several meetings were also held with John Laing Homes to coordinate the installation with other trades.

ACME technicians arrived to fit the brackets, rails, piston and sling for the elevator. Less than 12 hours after arriving on scene, it was running and installation was 90 percent complete. Once the builder finished the exterior doors, ACME completed its installation.

''It was an honor for us to be involved in a project that changed the lives of these deserving people,'' said Pope. ''It's gratifying to see how people and products in our industry can positively impact people's lives.''

Pope said the 2-hour episode will air on ABC at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6.

PGA Tour Challenge Results In Gift

LAS VEGAS - Ted Purdy was named this week's CRESTOR(R) (rosuvastatin calcium) Charity Challenge winner for his first-place standing entering the final round of the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas. The CRESTOR(R) Charity Challenge is a season-long competition that recognizes and rewards the tournament leader entering the final round at 35 PGA TOUR events.

Through the program, now in its second year, AstraZeneca will donate $3.5 million a year to designated health and PGA TOUR charities. At each of the selected tournaments, a $100,000 contribution will be made, supporting the PGA TOUR's "Drive to a Billion" campaign which celebrates the spirit of giving that has helped the TOUR and its tournaments approach the milestone of $1 billion dollars in charitable giving.

For Purdy's performance, CRESTOR, an AstraZeneca pharmaceutical product, and the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas will donate $50,000 to Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. In addition, $50,000 will be donated to the health care charity of Purdy's choice. CRESTOR(R) Charity Challenge winners and the tournament's designated charity will be recognized during the network or cable telecast of each tournament.

Last year, Tom Lehman was in the lead entering the final round of the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas. For his performance, AstraZeneca donated $50,000 to the Las Vegas Founders' Club, and Lehman donated $50,000 to the Children's Cancer Research Fund.

"Just as AstraZeneca provides important tools in managing our health, they are continuing to show their care and concern for the special children and families that we serve," said Jeffrey Gordon, president/CEO of the Foundation. Smith's Donates $50,000 To Food Bank

SPARKS, Nev. - Smith's Food & Drug Stores awarded the Food Bank of Northern Nevada a $50,000 grant to start new Kids Café sites and to support our existing program. The grant will help us purchase a truck to deliver meals to new summer feeding sites.

The grant will also be used in our marketing efforts designed to increase participation, including the purchase of new ice-cream truck-style sound systems that will play music as our trucks approach summer feeding sites, flyers sent to all Washoe County low-income schools advertising summer feeding sites in neighborhoods, and banners for 10 sites. The grant will also fund start-up costs for new children's feeding sites and maintenance for Kids Cafe trucks.

The Food Bank is a food distribution and support system for more than 80 different direct service, non-profit agencies serving the needy, the ill, the elderly and children. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 3 million pounds of food to more than 80 member agencies. The food, valued at more than $4.5 million, fed more than 45,000 people.

Smith’s Food & Drug Stores is a division of the Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR), one of the nation’s largest food retailers. Smith’s currently operates 126 combination food and drug stores in seven western states, including 36 stores in Nevada. In the Las Vegas area 2,090 Smith’s employees provide helpful friendly service in 27 stores.

Southern Wine & Spirits Raises $372,000

Miami - Nevada distributer, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., participated in growing national public and private relief efforts to aid the victims, families, and communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The company, together with employees in 19 states, collected and donated a combined $372,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Harvey R. Chaplin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., and Wayne E. Chaplin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., wrote in a letter addressed to the American Red Cross: "We challenged our 10,000 employees working in 19 states across the country to contribute to the fund-raising efforts of the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our challenge was that, for every dollar raised by our employees, the company, through its private charitable foundation, would match the contribution. MGM MIRAGE Named 'Corporation of the Year'

LAS VEGAS - MGM MIRAGE has been named the 2005 'Corporation of the Year' by the Latin Chamber of Commerce, one of the premier business organizations serving the Hispanic community in Southern Nevada.

Local Volleyball Tournament Raises Funds

LAS VEGAS - PSI World graduates in Las Vegas are hosting a beach volleyball tournament to benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps families who have had a child diagnosed with a life threatening or critical illness such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anemia, and other immunological diseases. This is the eleventh year that PSI World graduates have held the tournament to raise awareness for local charities.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Sunset Park, located at Sunset Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. More than 20 co-ed teams of six will participate in the event.

The public is invited to watch the tournament and participate in a number of raffles to win prizes, including an all-expense paid trip for two to Hawaii. Refreshments and a variety of food will be served throughout the day.

In addition to providing social, emotional, educational and psychological support, the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation hosts a summer day camp developed for children with catastrophic illnesses. Camp Cartwheel allows these children and their siblings to enjoy being kids together for a few days. Experiences include swimming, hiking, arts, horseback riding, and nature study.
