Commission Announces 06-07 Funding Opportunity

FALLON, Nev. - The Nevada Commission for National and Community Service, Inc. announced the availability of funds for 2006-07 AmeriCorps grants. The program year begins September 2006.

AmeriCorps grants fund and support high-quality programs that develop an ethic of civic responsibility in those who participate, strengthen communities by volunteer management, and help meet local needs through service in the areas of environment, public safety, homeland security, and other human needs. In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a small living allowance and an education award for post-secondary education expenses upon the successful completion of their service.

Agencies sponsor AmeriCorps member to implement local community service initiatives. Eligible agencies include non-profit community and faith-based organizations; state and local government entities; colleges and universities; school districts and Indian tribes.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the capacity to administer federal funds; implement a detailed plan of action to address a local unmet need; present strong connections to the community it serves; and have the ability to raise the required cash match, which average $25,000. Only applications submitted by agencies who attend one the technical assistance conferences listed below will be accepted. Applications are available. The submission deadline is Jan. 5, 2006.
