La Salsa Helps In Henderson

HENDERSON, Nev. - When La Salsa Restaurant at the District was planning it's grand opening, they wanted to do something to support the local community. They turned to HACA-Henderson Allied Community Advocates, which offers Breakfast Bookworm Program.

The goal of this program is to encourage family literacy for children in at-risk schools, as well as build the personal libraries of children who might not have many books at home. At the Breakfast Bookworm Event in February 2005 at CT Sewell Elementary School, La Salsa replaced the normal granola bars and applesauce breakfast with delicious breakfast burritos. The Restaurant's manager was the reader for the month, and read "The Little House" to a packed multipurpose room of students and parents. Each family gets a copy of the book for that month, and each child gets to pick an additional book from the "book buckets."

The event also developed a relationship between La Salsa and CT Sewell Elementary for additional support in the future. Breakfast was even more delicious for HACA who received a generous $2,500 donation to support the Breakfast Bookworm program. This non-profit, educational, and corporate partnership made everyone shout "Ole"!
