Harrah's Donates $1 Million To USO

WASHINGTON - In a show of support for the men and women in the U.S. military, Harrah's Entertainment, Inc., the world's largest casino operator, donated $1 million to the USO to maintain programs and services that benefit the troops and their families around the world.

Up to $600,000 will be used to purchase two mobile canteens for service members and their families in the Southwest and Midwestern United States. Mobile canteens are specially-equipped vehicles that enable the USO to extend its reach to military personnel. The remaining $400,000 will be used to refurbish select USO centers through a grant program that has been established. Under the agreement, centers will be required to submit proposals to USO World Headquarters defining their needs and outlining a budget for the repairs.

"We are very excited by this generous donation from Harrah's," said USO president and CEO Edward A. Powell. "Through the efforts of our supporters, the USO will continue its mission to improve the quality of life for U.S. service members while boosting their morale and serving as a bridge between them and the American people."

Harrah's chairman, president and CEO Gary Loveman, said, "Today Harrah's Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment became one company, and we can think of no better way to celebrate this historic merger than by supporting the men and women who have given so much in defense of our nation. For more than 64 years, the USO (United Service Organizations) has been providing morale and recreation-type services to U.S. military personnel and their families.
