Businesses Support 'Nevada Passage'

RENO, Nev. - A two-person team of firefighters won "The Nevada Passage" made-for-TV adventure competition sponsored by the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) along with Nissan, Paul Mitchell, XTERRA Gear, XTERRA Wetsuits, K2 Sports, Kawasaki, Stearns kayaks, Atlas Snow-Shoe Company, and Zorrel sportswear company of Henderson.

The firefighters, Erin Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., and Brian Rothell of Richmond, Va., earned the highest score, 86 out of a possible 120, during the six-day competition that began near Las Vegas May 19 and included adventure sports at Ely, Elko, and Fallon. Four other teams also won events, including entrepreneurs, Tom Lyons, 43, a Reno real estate investor who won the kayaking competition with his teammate, Atlanta swimwear company owner Megan Melgaard, 25, in front of a cheering hometown crowd.

"It was a hard-fought competition that is going to excite and intrigue at least 2 million television viewers when the program airs beginning in August," Hunt, chair of the NCOT, which initiated the event, said. "They're all winners and we're proud of them for taking on the challenge and enabling us to create this adventure program."

Twenty amateur athletes from 11 states, paired into 10 teams of one man and one woman by profession, competed for the prize, a trophy. Their ages range from 25 to 58. "The Nevada Passage" will be made into a one-hour syndicated program and shown on network affiliate and other TV stations from Aug. 1 through Feb. 2006.

Viewers will see rock-climbing at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Jet Skiing on Lake Mead, both near Las Vegas; four-wheel driving in the high desert near Ely, biking and snowshoeing in Lamoille Canyon near Elko, sandboarding at Sand Mountain near Fallon and kayaking in Reno. The Nevada Passage is expected to air in at least 80 TV markets, primarily daytimes during weekends, when sports programs attract the most viewers.

Seventy-four stations already have scheduled the program, and it is confirmed to air in Las Vegas on KLAS-TV, Channel 8, Reno on KOLO-TV, Channel 8, and key Nevada travel markets such as Sacramento, Calif., Salt Lake City and Palm Springs, Calif. Harrah's Host Tournment For Local Program

LAUGHLIN, Nev. - As Harrah’s prepares to host the 36th annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, the company gave its employees a chance to share in the excitement of the world’s best-known poker tournament while benefiting local programs of the Meals On Wheels Association of America.

Harrah’s Laughlin employees were invited to participate in World Series of Poker Employee tournaments held on April 6 and 7 at the property. Employees entered the poker tournament by donating money to the local Meals On Wheels chapters located in Laughlin, Nev. and Bullhead City, Ariz. Eighty Harrah’s Laughlin employees participated in the tournament raising $2,500 for Meals On Wheels.

Ten finalists played in the Harrah’s Laughlin World Series of Poker Employee Finals Tournament on Monday, May 2, 2005 in the poker room located in the main casino. Only Harrah’s employees can participate in the tournament. Three finalists from the Harrah’s Laughlin tournament will receive a trip to Harrah’s Las Vegas to play against the winners from other Harrah’s-owned properties in a No Hold ‘em tournament being held June 1.

The winner of Harrah’s final employee event will receive a $5,000 grand prize and a seat in the World Series of Poker Casino Employees’ Texas Hold 'Em No Limit Event on June 2 at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

“Harrah's Laughlin was pleased to offer our employees a chance to experience the unparalleled excitement of the World Series of Poker,” said John Koster, senior vice president and general manager “The tournaments were very exciting, and our employees were happy to assist a cause that brings healthy meals and friendship each day to homebound seniors in our community.”

In 2002, Harrah’s became a national prime sponsor of the Meals On Wheels Association of America’s “March For Meals” campaign. Since then, Harrah’s has committed $2 million to the organization and its local affiliates and donated 22 delivery vehicles to local chapters across the country including the Meals On Wheels program facilitated by the Laughlin Family Resource Center in Laughlin, Nev.

According to Meals On Wheels Association of America, more than 13 percent of Americans are older than 65, and that number is projected to jump to 20 percent by 2030. The organization reports its services are already stretched, as four out of every 10 Meals On Wheels programs have waiting lists for seniors in need of meals. While some funding for the local meal programs comes from government sources, the programs rely extensively on private donations and contributions in order to meet their budgetary needs.

Hospitals Host Men's Health Fair

HENDERSON, Nev. - St. Rose Dominican Hospitals will host a free Men’s Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 11 at Las Vegas Harley-Davidson, 2605 Eastern Avenue.

The Men’s Health Fair will include vision and hearing tests, cholesterol, glucose and lipid panel screenings along with skin cancer, body fat and blood pressure screenings. There will be an “ask a nurse” table, fun contests, like hairiest chest and biggest biceps, food, prizes, and giveaways.

''Men sometimes need a little more coaxing to take care of their health and get appropriate screenings,'' said Holly Lyman of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. ''We put everything they need in one place and surrounded them with motorcycles to make it a little more interesting for them.''

Gladiators Donate To All-Stars

LAS VEGAS - The Las Vegas Gladiators have generated $1,250 to donate to the Greater Las Vegas After-School All-Stars through their ''Fling-A-Football'' program during every home game.

Gladiators General Manager Dan Dolby will be presenting the $1,250 donation to Elaine Wynn and John Pucci of the After-School All-Stars at the Gladiators game at Noon on Sunday, May 22, when they host to the Arizona Rattlers.

''We are always trying to get more involved with the community and working with the After-School All-Stars has been great,'' Dolby said. ''This is just another way for the Gladiators to show our support for the community here in Las Vegas.''

The $1,250 donation from the Gladiators will be used to support after-school sports, education and mentoring programs for at-risk youth. These programs are provided free by the After-School All-Stars to youth throughout the greater Las Vegas area.

''We are grateful to the Las Vegas Gladiators for this extremely generous donation,'' said Jackie Locks, executive director of the After-School All-Star program. ''Community and corporate partners, such as the Las Vegas Gladiators, make it possible for us to provide comprehensive out-of-school programs that keep our children safe and help them achieve success in school and life.''

Commission Launches New Site

FALLON, Nev. - The Nevada Commission for National and Community Service, Inc. (NCNCS) announced the launch of a redesigned and updated web site. The new site www.americorpsnevada.org replaces one that had been in place since 2001. The site can be directly accessed from the NBCB.

“The website now reflects our expanding mission: to make service and volunteerism a positive experience and a commitment shared by all Nevadans,” said Executive Director Shawn Lecker-Pomaville.

The Nevada Commission for National and Community Service, Inc. (NCNCS) was established as a 501(c)3 organization in 1997 and, by executive order in 1998, given full authority as the governor’s commission for the administration of AmeriCorps programs. NCNCS was created to link community-building organizations with the resources to utilize people like you who can make a difference.

Since 1998, nearly 900 AmeriCorps members have served at 13 programs throughout Nevada. NCNCS continues to grow by expanding quality AmeriCorps programs, establishing new programs to meet the state’s changing needs, and by working with other organizations focused on community-building.

Today, NCNCS administers nearly $1.4 million in federal funding for AmeriCorps programs statewide. Seven programs in Las Vegas, Reno, Carson City and Elko utilize the skills of 160 highly trained AmeriCorps members: volunteers who dedicate between three and 12 months of their lives to community service. In exchange, they receive stipends for minimal living expenses as well as an education award of up to $4,725 for their own educational advancement.

With AmeriCorps programs returning $9 in services for every $1 in state funding, NCNCS has begun to expand its mission. Beginning in 2001, NCNCS has been working more closely with organizations to promote volunteerism to all Nevadans, train organizations to utilize volunteers more effectively, and recognize outstanding volunteers for their service.

Sierra Pacific Assists Elko Non-Profits

ELKO, Nev. - Sierra Pacific Power awarded energy efficiency grants totaling $7,200 to two Elko non-profit organizations, the Western Folklife Center (WFC) and BrightPath, an adult daycare center. An energy efficiency grant for $4,876 was also awarded on Friday to the Golconda Fire Protection Community Hall in Golconda.

The purpose of the grant program is to help nonprofit groups better manage their utility costs and to help reduce the total amount of energy Sierra Pacific needs to produce at its power plants or purchase from other energy suppliers, said Larry Rackley, project manager for energy efficiency at Sierra Pacific. With the energy efficiency improvements, BrightPath, the WFC and the Golconda Community Hall should each be able to save hundreds of dollars annually on their energy bills.

Rackley said The Western Folklife Center plans to use its $5,000 grant to install new, energy efficient fluorescent lights and occupancy sensor switches that automatically turn lights on or off depending on whether a room is occupied.

Located in the former Pioneer Hotel building, the WFC works to make people more aware of folk arts and is best known for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering every January. The WFC also produces national programming for public radio and television and maintains a year-round cultural center in Elko.

Teddi Baer, operations manager for the WFC, said the lighting upgrades planned for the center should result in a substantial energy savings for the organization. “We’re just trying to do our part to save energy, and we appreciate the fact these grants are offered to the nonprofit sector,” she explained.

BrightPath will use its $2,200 grant to replace existing single pane windows with energy efficient dual pane windows. BrightPath offers adult daycare programs for people who need care, but who are not in need of full-time nursing home care. The program also gives family members a respite from their responsibilities as caregivers.

In 2004, Sierra Pacific Power awarded more than $75,000 in grants to 16 nonprofit organizations in northern Nevada to fund energy efficiency improvements. Approximately $100,000 in grant funding is expected to be awarded in 2005.

Las Vegas Speedway Hosts Tournament

LAS VEGAS – The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities will hold its second annual Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Cannery Hotel & Casino. The charity event will kick off the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Tournament players will have the opportunity to play against NHRA drivers, including Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser King NHRA Top Fuel Dragster. Entry fee (buy-in) is $250 and players will receive $1,000 in chips. Players also will receive complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks throughout the evening.

The grand prize for this year’s tournament is a trip for two to Honolulu, Hawaii, including five-day, four-night accommodations and roundtrip airfare.

Carl's Jr. Awards Scholorships

CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Carl's Jr., a subsidiary of CKE Restaurants, Inc., announced the award recipients of the 2005 La Estrella Latina de Carl's Jr. Scholarship Program. In an effort to award deserving students and support continuing education, the quick-service restaurant chain has awarded $60,000, or 60-$1,000 awards, to college-bound students from several states, including Scott Grady of Las Vegas, Nevada. Grady is a student at the Advanced Technologies Academy.

Lance Burton Joins Ohio Benefit

LAS VEGAS - ''Lance Burton & Friends'' will once again put on a show for the Zelzah Shrine Temple (The Shriners) on Sunday, July 31 following the Crusade for Children in Louisville, which benefits the Ohio Valley.

On Saturday, June 4, Lance Burton will headline the Bombard Theatre at the Kentucky Center in Louisville. The show is free and will be televised on the WHAS Telethon from 8-11 p.m. Donations are also welcome at www.whascrusade.org

This is the third year that Lance Burton has participated in the Crusade for Children to benefit special needs children. Mac King, who performs comedy magic on The Strip, will also appear. Last year, the Crusade for Children raised $6.3 million.

Wal-Mart Gives Grants To Nevada Teachers

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - More than 3,800 outstanding teachers who are making a positive difference in the lives of young people were recognized through Wal-Mart's 10th annual Teacher of the Year program. As a result of their selection, schools of winning teachers will receive $1,000 each from Wal-Mart. Thirty teachers received educational grants in Nevada.

Through the program, Wal-Mart donated $4.2 million to schools of winning teachers nationwide. One teacher was selected by each neighborhood Wal-Mart store, SAM'S CLUB, Neighborhood Market store and Wal-Mart Distribution Center across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Since it began in 1995, Wal-Mart Stores Teacher of the Year Program has honored more than 25,000 teachers nationwide and donated more than $18.5 million to local schools.

In addition to the $1,000 educational grants, winning teachers will receive a $50 shopping card to buy supplies for their classroom and an honorary Wal-Mart greeter's vest. These teachers also have the opportunity to apply for state and national Teacher of the Year honors, according to Reithemeyer, for which Wal-Mart donates an additional $10,000 to schools of state winners. All state winners are automatically entered into the national competition. The national winner will receive an additional $25,000 educational grant for a total of $36,000 to his or her school.

''Educators need to be recognized now more than ever as they face the current challenges of improving student achievement,'' said Dr. William Bushaw, executive director of Phi Delta Kappa International. ''The recognition that this program brings, as well as the dollars it provides to schools to purchase resources that can make teachers better educators, is why we are so pleased to work in partnership with the Wal-Mart & SAM'S CLUB Foundation every year. It is a very tangible contribution by corporate America toward school improvement across the country.''

Lake Las Vegas Hosts Golf Tournament

LAS VEGAS - The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities will hold its third annual Speedway Children’s Charities Golf Tournament on Monday, June 20, at the exclusive South Shore Golf Course at Lake Las Vegas. The tournament will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and will conclude with a luncheon and awards ceremony.

Entry fee for the tournament is $250 per player, or $1,000 per foursome, which includes greens fees, use of golf cart and luncheon. Hole sponsorships also are available at various levels. Las Vegas Harley-Davidson Hosts Country

Companies Sponsor Triathlon For Charities

HENDERSON, Nev. - Lake Las Vegas Resort, Sunset Racing, H2O Velocity, GNC, and Cytosport have joined together to raise money for local charities through the 2005 Sunset Sprint Triathlon Series. This series will be made up of four events held on May 21, June 18, July 24 and September 10, 2005, all of which will take place on the same course consisting of an 800M swim, 15K bike and 5K run throughout the scenic resort. This course is designed to be both challenging and welcoming to triathletes of all levels.

Home Builders Support Area Conservation

LAS VEGAS - The Southern Nevada Home Builders Association announced it will join sponsors to support ''Through the Eyes of Children'' 2005 Clark County Environment and Conservation Calendar Contest. Pony Express Club Helps Restore History

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Members of the Pony Express Club of Nevada presented a $1,000 check to the Nevada State Museum to aid the museum's efforts to restore the 55-year-old Pony Express commemorative plaque and monument on Carson Street. The club raised the funds by raffling two hand-carved rifle scabbards.

The Pony Express plaque was dedicated in 1960 to commemorate the centennial reenactment staged to increase national interest in the Pony Express and support preservation of its history. The reenactment started on July 19, 1960. After its completion, the Nevada riders decided to form a club to keep the history alive.

''True to their mission, the Pony Express Club of Nevada is keeping the proud story of the Pony Express alive, 145 years after the last rider,'' Nevada State Museum Curator of History Bob Nylen said. ''This donation will help preserve the plaque and monument outside the museum so that future generations may know about this important and epic tale from the days of the early West.''

The Nevada State Museum actively engages people in understanding and celebrating Nevada's natural and cultural heritage. The museum collects, preserves, and presents this heritage through exhibits, educational programs, and publications.

Exhibits highlight the state's geology, history, a replica walk-through mine and ghost town, and Under One Sky: Nevada's Native American Heritage. LVMS Hosts High School Drag Racing

LAS VEGAS - Starting May 13, The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host the LVMS High School Drag Racing Series Presented by Meadow Gold & Short Line Express Markets, as part of its GlobePC.com Show 'n' Go Friday Series.

The five-race series is open to all registered high school students and will be contested May 13, June 10, July 15, Aug. 12, and Sept. 16. Each race winner will receive $100, a trophy, a winner's decal and an LVMS hat. Each racer's four best finishes will count toward the points championship.

''We are introducing our new high school program as the next step for participants in our Midnight Mayhem and Jr. Drag Racing League in their advancement in the sport," said Chris Blair, LVMS' senior director of drag racing operations. ''The LVMS high school program will allow the NHRA Jr. Dragster participants to move up to a full-size car and also will afford Midnight Mayhem racers an opportunity to advance from street-legal drags to the competition structure of sportsman drag racing.

America West Assists School District

PHOENIX — America West Airlines announced its groundbreaking AWArds for Schools program that will allow schools in the Clark County School District, which is the fifth largest public school district in the country, to benefit when participating America West customers take to the sky.

''As the hometown airline of Las Vegas, we are always looking for ways to give back to the local community,'' said Travis Christ, vice president, marketing. ''We know our customers care deeply about children’s education, and our AWArds for Schools program gives them yet another great reason to fly America West.''

America West’s AWArds for Schools program partnered with the Clark County Public Education Foundation (CCPEF), a non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of teaching and learning in southern Nevada. Under the AWArds for Schools program, customers can go to www.americawest.com/AWArdsforSchools to obtain the eCertificate code for the Clark County school of their choice and enter it every time they book air travel with America West online. The airline will then donate one percent of the ticket revenue to that school. The donation is valid for any America West or America West Express flight from any departure or destination city.

America West operates more than 900 flights daily to 95 destinations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica. It operates approximately 150 flights a day from Las Vegas to 58 nonstop destinations – more than any other carrier – and several new nonstop routes from Las Vegas have been added this year, including flights to Boise, Idaho; Albuquerque, N.M.; Bakersfield, Calif.; and Pittsburgh.

On May 1, America West launched nonstop service from Las Vegas to Anchorage, Alaska; on May 6, it will launch nonstop service between Las Vegas and Oklahoma City; and on June 17, it will begin nonstop service between Las Vegas and Monterey, Calif. Circus Circus Reno Hosts Artist Competition

RENO, Nev. - Circus Circus Reno is sponsoring the Artown Family Series and hosting the ''Future Artists Competition'' as part the City of Reno's Artown Festival, July 1-31. Future Artists sponsors also include Reno News & Review, The X 100.1 FM, University of Nevada Reno School of Arts, Digiprint, and Somersett.

Designed to showcase local youth talent, the competition accepts submissions from students, kindergarten through grade 12, within a 50-mile radius of Reno. Submissions must reflect a tasteful theme and can be dropped off at Circus Circus between May 1 and June 10. Submissions can range in size and a variety of mediums are acceptable, including: oil; acrylic and watercolor paints; mixed media collage; and pen, crayon, charcoal, and pencil drawings.

A panel of accomplished artists and educators will judge the winners in four age categories: kindergarten through third, fourth through sixth, middle school, and high school. Judging is based on professional criteria: originality, integrity in relationship to the subject, technique, use of color, composition, use of materials, and enthusiasm in approach.

Cash awards for the top three places in each category will be given to both the artist and their school’s art program. Last year, Circus Circus gave away cash awards totaling $3,500 to artists and schools. This year, $4,500 in awards will be presented at Wingfield Park by the Truckee River on July 25. The winning submissions will be displayed throughout the month of July at Circus Circus Reno. They will then be on display at the University of Nevada Reno’s Church Fine Arts Building July 28 through Aug. 12, with a gallery reception on July 28.

All artwork must include the student’s name, phone, address and name of their school. Submissions may not be matted or framed and can be sent to Circus Circus c/o Valerie Sarich, 500 N. Business Bank Breaks Givings Record

LAS VEGAS - Business Bank of Nevada had a record year in 2004 for philanthropic efforts in Nevada. The bank’s monetary, in-kind, and volunteer support last year totaled nearly $30,000 in cash and in-kind donations, including computer and other office equipment, and more than 1,000 hours of volunteer services from Bank employees. This is a 17.6 percent increase over 2003.

''We view our involvement in the communities we serve as an extension of our bank, and if the community succeeds, we will also be successful,'' said John Guedry, president of Business Bank. ''While we're very proud of what we achieved last year with our monetary and in-kind donations, we're perhaps more excited about the human resources we were able to provide to nonprofit organizations statewide. Providing over 1,000 hours of volunteer services to nonprofit groups statewide was no small feat for a company our size.''

Komen Race for the Cure, United Way of Southern Nevada, Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada, West Charleston Lions Club, Western Nevada Community College Foundation (WNCC), and the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

The bank contributes financial, in-kind, and volunteer assistance to nonprofit institutions and organizations that enhance the quality of life and promote public interest where the company conducts its business.
